$72,000 and Counting: How a Dog Walking Business Supports NJ Rescues

Pups and Recreation has raised $72,000 for New Jersey dog rescues since opening in 2022, through fundraising events, transport support, foster assistance, and free walks for adoptable dogs. The number isn't the point on its own. It reflects years of hands-on rescue work Luigi and Alison did with Save the Satos and Eleventh Hour Rescue long before this business existed.

We didn't start this business and then decide to care about rescue. It was the other way around. We've been working in rescue for over 20 years.

Since 2022, we've raised $72,000 for New Jersey dog rescues. We've gone on 2 Rescue Missions to Puerto Rico with Save the Satos to Trap, Neuter, and Release dogs. We also bring some home for adoption here in the US. We have help hundreds of dogs find their forever homes here in NJ.

Here's where that support has gone, and why these particular organizations matter to us.

Save the Satos

Save the Satos works to rescue street dogs, "satos," in Puerto Rico, where the stray dog population is a serious ongoing crisis. Luigi and Alison have done direct hands-on work with this organization, including the kind of front-line care and handling that gave them the rescue and puppy know-how they now bring to every walk and every new client dog. A lot of what we teach clients about socializing rescue dogs and handling early trauma traces directly back to lessons learned through this work.

Eleventh Hour Rescue

Eleventh Hour Rescue, based in New Jersey, is where Alison and Luigi have logged real hours doing the unglamorous work of rescue: fostering, transport, adoption events, and the follow-up support that keeps a rescue dog on track after adoption. EHR pulls dogs from high-risk situations and works to place them in homes across the state. Our relationship with them isn't a sponsorship in name only. It's built on years of direct involvement.

NJSH Pet Rescue

NJSH Pet Rescue focuses on finding homes for dogs and cats across New Jersey, often taking in animals from situations where time is limited. We've supported their work through fundraising and by helping get adoptable dogs some exercise and socialization while they wait for the right home.

Jersey Pits Rescue

Jersey Pits Rescue works specifically to rescue and re-home pit bulls and pit mixes, a group of dogs that still faces unfair stereotypes and gets overlooked in a lot of adoption searches. We've supported their events and helped promote adoptable dogs to give them a better shot at getting noticed.

The Seeing Eye

The Seeing Eye, based in Morristown, is one of the most established guide dog organizations in the country, training dogs to support people who are blind or visually impaired. Supporting an organization this established might look different from our other partnerships, but it reflects the same idea: dogs change lives, and the organizations doing that work deserve support.

Friends of Randolph Animal Pound

Friends of Randolph Animal Pound supports the animal shelter in Randolph, the same town where Pups and Recreation was originally founded in 2022 before we moved to our current home in Wharton. Supporting this organization is close to home in a literal sense, and it's one of the first partnerships we built as a business.

How the support actually happens

Fundraising events make up part of the $72,000, but not all of it. Luigi and Alison have also personally handled transport runs for dogs coming up from the South or arriving from Puerto Rico, provided foster support during gaps in placement, and had our team walk and socialize adoptable dogs waiting for homes, giving them exercise and attention that makes them more adoptable and easier for a new family to handle from day one.

Why this stays part of the business

A lot of companies add a charitable angle once they're established. For us, the order was reversed. The rescue work came first, and the business grew out of it. That's part of why our team's comfort level with rescue dogs, reactive dogs, and dogs with rough histories isn't a marketing angle. It's just what Luigi and Alison have been doing for years, and what they've built this entire team around.
