The Best Dog-Friendly Parks and Trails in Morris County, NJ

Morris County has seven standout parks and trail systems for dog owners, ranging from fully off-leash dog parks to long paved trails perfect for a leashed walk. Lewis Morris County Park and Central Park of Morris County both have official off-leash dog parks, while Loantaka Brook Reservation and Patriots' Path offer miles of scenic on-leash walking. Here's what to know about each one before you go.

We spend more time in Morris County parks than almost anyone, since walking dogs across 26 towns means we're on these trails nearly every day. People ask us constantly which parks are actually worth the drive, which ones have parking, and which ones let dogs off leash. Here's our honest rundown of the best spots, based on what we see out there week to week.

A reminder before you go: Morris County Park Police can be reached at 973-326-7654 if you ever run into a rule violation or safety concern on county park property.

Loantaka Brook Reservation (Morristown/Chatham)

Loantaka Brook is one of the most popular walks we recommend to clients, and for good reason. It's a paved multi-use trail alongside a gravel horse trail, with stream access that dogs genuinely love on a warm day. The common address is 468 South St, Morris Twp NJ 07960, and parking is generally easy to find outside of peak weekend mornings.

Dogs are required to be on a 6-foot leash, and entry is free. The flat paved surface makes it a good choice for older dogs or dogs still building up walking stamina, while the stream access gives more active dogs a chance to cool off and splash around.

Patriots' Path (Morris County-wide)

Patriots' Path isn't one single trail so much as a network, stretching more than 35 miles across Morris County and connecting all the way from Essex County to Warren County. The surfaces vary between crushed stone, gravel, and dirt, so it's worth choosing your section based on your dog's paws and your own footwear.

Like Loantaka, dogs need to be on a 6-foot leash here. What makes Patriots' Path worth repeat visits is the variety. You can walk a quiet wooded stretch one week and a section that runs along water the next, all without leaving the trail system.

Lewis Morris County Park

Lewis Morris is one of the few spots in the county with an official off-leash dog park, which makes it a favorite for dogs who need to burn energy without a leash attached. Beyond the off-leash area, the park also has more than six dog-friendly trails where leashes are required, so you can pair off-leash play with a longer on-leash hike in the same visit.

It's a great option if you're trying to tire out a high-energy dog before a long car ride or a busy afternoon at home.

Central Park of Morris County (Parsippany-Troy-Hills)

Central Park of Morris County, managed by the Morris County Park Commission, is another spot with a dedicated off-leash dog park. It tends to draw a different crowd than Lewis Morris simply because of where it sits geographically, making it the more convenient option if you're based closer to Parsippany or the eastern part of the county.

If your dog does well off leash around other dogs, this is worth adding into your regular rotation alongside Lewis Morris so you're not always fighting the same weekend crowd.

Hacklebarney State Park (Chester Township)

Hacklebarney is a bit further out for some of our clients, but it's worth the drive. The park has nine hiking trails, with leashed dogs allowed throughout, and the terrain here is noticeably more rugged than Loantaka or Patriots' Path. Expect rock scrambles, stream crossings, and real elevation change.

This is a good pick for dogs who are already fit and comfortable on trickier terrain. It's less ideal for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs still building up hiking endurance.

Schooley's Mountain Park (Long Valley)

Schooley's Mountain allows leashed dogs and includes a waterfall trail that's become a favorite for clients looking for something a little more scenic than a standard neighborhood loop. The waterfall makes a nice turnaround point for a moderate hike, and the surrounding trail network gives you options to extend the walk if your dog still has energy left.

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation (Jefferson Township)

At more than 3,200 acres, Mahlon Dickerson is the biggest property on this list, and it has a fenced dog park with separate sections for small and large dogs. That separation matters if you've got a smaller or more anxious dog who doesn't do well getting rushed by bigger, more boisterous dogs in an open off-leash area.

Between the size of the reservation and the fenced dog park, Mahlon Dickerson works well as a full outing. Some visitors come just for an off-leash play session, and others turn it into a longer hike through the property.

A quick note on leash rules

Most of the trail systems on this list, Loantaka Brook, Patriots' Path, Hacklebarney, and Schooley's Mountain, require dogs on a 6-foot leash at all times. Only Lewis Morris, Central Park of Morris County, and the fenced area at Mahlon Dickerson offer official off-leash space. Bringing a leash even to the off-leash parks is smart, since you'll need it to get from the parking lot to the fenced area.

How we use these parks with client dogs

As part of our Adventure Daycare and Doggy Field Trips, our team rotates through several of these locations depending on the dog's energy level, age, and comfort with other dogs. A senior dog might get a slow leashed loop at Loantaka, while a high-energy young dog might get an off-leash session at Lewis Morris followed by a hike. We're fully insured and bonded and CPR and First Aid Certified, so we're comfortable handling whatever a trail throws at us, from a sudden thunderstorm to a stream crossing.

If you've got a dog who gets restless on the same neighborhood walk every day, these parks are worth building into your own routine too. Morris County has more good dog terrain within a 20-minute drive than most counties in the state.
